PESHAWAR: At least two police personnel were martyred in separate attacks targeting polio vaccination teams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district on Monday, police said.

A Deputy Inspector General of Police said unidentified assailants targeted security teams escorting vaccination workers in the Tabbai and Dag Qila areas of Salarzai tehsil.

The martyred personnel were identified as Qadir and Aziz, the official added.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the attacks on police personnel performing duties for polio vaccination teams and sought a detailed report from the Inspector General of Police.

In a statement, the chief minister said targeting officials engaged in national duty was a “cowardly act” and vowed that militants would not succeed in their designs.

Authorities said such attacks have repeatedly disrupted anti-polio campaigns in the terrorism-affected province, where vaccination teams and their security escorts have been frequently targeted.

Earlier in January, four policemen were also martyred in separate firing incidents in the province, police had confirmed.

Earlier, suicide attack at the Dajal inter-provincial check post in Bhakkar claimed the lives of two personnel of the Punjab Police, while one constable was injured.

According to reports, the attacker blew himself up near the check post, causing a powerful explosion that targeted the officers on duty.
