A Thai footballer was killed, and 12 players sustained wounds after lightning struck a ground in the Sungai Golok town in Thailand’s southern Narathiwat province, the Independent reported.
The police said the incident occurred at 5:30pm (local time) when heavy rain hit during the semi-final match of a regional tournament.
Sofwan Awae, 24, died after being severely injured by the lightning bolt that struck the pitch at Santiphap Stadium in Sungai Golok, southern Thailand on Tuesday, the police said.
The police chief said the medical team could not save Awae’s life despite prompt medical efforts.
CNA reported that Awae was playing for Abu x Nong against SAMCOLT at Sungai Golok Stadium, located on the border of Thailand and Malaysia’s Kelantan state.
Footage circulated on social media, showing that lightning struck in the stadium after a loud explosion.
Police said a dozen players were shifted to hospital after being injured.
Yala Football Club extended condolences to the family of the slain player.
According to the Department of Disease Control, lightning incidents are common in Thailand. At least 283 people lost their lives between 2020 and 2024.
