Scotland fast bowler Wheal retires from cricket

Recurring back and knee injuries force the paceman to end his career after four T20 World Cups

Scotland fast bowler Brad Wheal has retired from cricket at the age of 30, citing recurring injuries that have left him unable to cope with the demands of fast bowling.

Wheal made his international debut against Hong Kong in 2016 and went on to play 18 one-day internationals, taking 27 wickets, and 26 Twenty20 internationals, claiming 24 dismissals.

The right-arm paceman featured in four ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, including the 2026 edition in India. He was also part of Scotland teams that recorded memorable victories over Bangladesh in 2021 and the West Indies in 2022.

Wheal, who also represented English county side Hampshire, said the decision to end his career had not been easy but was one he had come to terms with.

“I’ve loved my time at Hampshire and representing Scotland as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand, and I’ve made the decision to retire from playing cricket,” he said.

“I’ve had four stress fractures in my back and recently had surgery on my knee, and ultimately my body can’t cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore.”

Wheal said representing Scotland had been a source of pride for him and his family, adding that his experiences at international tournaments and friendships with teammates were among the highlights of his career.

“I’m incredibly thankful to all my teammates, coaches and support staff who I’ve worked with over the years,” he said, also thanking Scotland supporters for their backing.

Wheal added that he would continue to follow the national team and support his former teammates from afar.
