Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) cites security concerns amid sensitive bilateral tension
Pakistan has formally called for a neutral venue for the 2026 Men’s Hockey Asian Champions Trophy, citing security concerns amid heightened tensions with India, while reaffirming its commitment to competing against all teams.
In an official statement, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani stated the PHF has formally requested the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to relocate the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy 2026 tournament or shift all of Pakistan’s matches to a neutral venue.
“This decision has been made in light of the current sensitive bilateral situation and security conditions between Pakistan and India, ensuring a safe, dignified, and conducive environment for our national players and officials.”
The PHF statement said Pakistan remains fully committed to the Asian Champions Trophy and the global promotion of hockey.
“We are prepared to play against all FIH member nations, including India, and stand firmly by the principle of keeping sports separate from politics,” the PHF chief said.
“We strongly hope that the Asian Hockey Federation will favorably consider our honorable proposal for a neutral venue to ensure Pakistan’s uninterrupted and full participation.”
The other day India’s Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said Pakistan would be among six top Asian teams taking part in the tournament, alongside hosts India, China, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea.
The tournament will be played from October 27 to November 5 in Jalandhar and Mohali, with the final scheduled for November 5, according to details announced at the event’s logo and schedule unveiling in Mohali.
Bangladesh and Oman have been listed as reserve teams in case any of the participating sides withdraw, organisers said.
