I’ve shared my desire to be a better gift giver over the years, and let me tell you, it’s an ongoing process. Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 11, and I’ve found that 90% of being a better gift giver is planning well ahead of time. I have a note from Bennett’s preschool teacher I’ve been meaning to frame for five years now! Framing can feel like a chore because of all the decisions that have to be made, from selecting what to frame to figuring out the best way to display it.
Framebridge is my favorite place for creative inspiration, and they can frame just about anything. One way to hit it out of the park with any mom is to frame a memento she’s saved and cherishes but hasn’t done anything with yet.
I don’t know one mother who isn’t thinking about environmental health these days. Give the gift of safe cookware, especially if mom has a particular pot or pan she’s been wanting to replace. It’s an upgrade she’ll appreciate.
Putting a Lunya silk sleep mask on signals “off duty” mode. I have one of these masks, and I immediately exhale once it hits my eyes. It’s a hit with Joe too—we often have to trade off who gets to wear it at night.
4. A Day to Herself
Book a sitter (or be the sitter yourself) and block off a day on her calendar to do whatever she wants, wherever she wants. Feel like a hero.
As my kids get older, I associate their uniqueness with what lights them up. A bracelet with icons and symbols that represent the whole family would be a really special way to celebrate the family you’ve created together. Etsy has a ton of create-your-own options.

When I was at Esalen last month, I tried an amazing body oil I can’t stop thinking about. I would rarely treat myself to it, but it would make such a luxurious gift.
8. Art Project
I love the idea of a creative gift that kids and dad can make together. One idea: Have each kid make a portrait of mom to display when she wakes up. Another: Write little messages to mom on colorful paper, roll them into little scrolls, and place them in a hand-painted wooden chest.
Indoor plants are a great gift for anyone who loves to exercise their green thumb. If she loves to garden, get her a perennial plant. Even better, make it a ritual that grows over time, each year adding something new to the garden. Don’t be shy in asking her what plants she loves the most.

If she loves tennis like I do, get her a new tennis racket that’s been on her list (I have my eye on the Wilson Roland-Garros 2025 Clash). Or if you don’t know her product preference, buy her a gift card to her brand of choice. If tennis isn’t her thing, get her something to support her unique hobbies.
I love the idea of putting together an album of family photos you’ve taken on your phone that she’s never seen before. I’d love it if Joe did something like this for me.
For the mom who loves to jot down lists and notes, get her a great notepad. I designed a few for Target that are available for a limited time.
15. Spa Service
Almost any mom would love the gift of a spa service, be it a deep tissue massage, a day at a modern bathhouse, or a hydrating facial. For Twin Cities locals, I love Watershed Spa, and I recommend Paige Haber for Shiatsu and other bodywork modalities.
