While Starsand Island doesn’t focus as much on farming as Stardew Valley does, both games have a lot of overlap when it comes to the activities available for participation, even with Starsand still being in its early access period. As a newer game, Starsand Island has the chance to see what works and what needs improvement in similar games that have come before it.
Starsand Island: How to Unlock All Pets (Locations)
It’s not true island living without a loyal companion!
Starsand Island has made many of its features quite relaxing to participate in, and it’s clear that the developers want this game to be as stress-free as possible, encouraging you to take your time as you progress.

Moonlit Forest
The Equivalent of Stardew’s Mines
In Starsand Island, you’ll spend a fair amount of time exploring the Moonlit Forest as part of the Explorer quests, and because there are a lot of materials that you can only get from the forest. Moonlit Forest is sectioned into different areas, which gives you teleport points as you unlock camps deeper inside the zone. It’s a system that functions somewhat like the elevator in Stardew’s mines.
With the mines, you don’t always know what you’re going to face or which levels are going to be completely dark. Moonlit Forest is more relaxing because you know what to expect. The locations of enemies and resources are always the same. This also makes it easier for you to get what you need, because you can go directly to the spot where that resource is located and know that you’ll find it.

Stamina Management
Stamina Lasts Longer in Starsand Island
Similar to other life simulators, Starsand Island has a stamina bar that is essentially a currency for activities. It functions the same way as energy in Stardew Valley. When you perform tasks like mining ore, you consume stamina, and ff you use all your stamina, you pass out. You also pass out if you stay awake too long, and passing out means you start the next day with half of your stamina as a punishment.
Compared to Stardew Valley, it feels like stamina doesn’t drain as quickly in Starsand Island, but that could be due to how you aren’t completing as many tasks that require stamina regularly, such as watering plants, which takes barely any stamina in Starsand. Plus, you get so much food from islanders in Starsand that you always have a way to replenish stamina.

Islander Requests
They Want Just a Few Items
In Starsand Island, islanders can request items through the Request Bulletin. This is the same as the requests posted on the board by Pierre’s in Stardew Valley. However, the Stardew requests tend to ask for items that aren’t the easiest to get, such as produce that’s out of season.
For requests in Starsand Island, you have multiple requests to pick from each day, so there’s a higher chance that at least one of those requests will ask for an item you already have, or one that’s fairly easy to get. This makes it more relaxing because you can earn coins and affection with NPCs without panicking about getting items within a timeframe that might not be possible to get in that time.

Mail
Islanders Send so Much Mail
Stardew Valley’s characters send you items sometimes. However, Starsand Island’s NPCs are always sending you mail. Most of that mail also includes items that are related to whatever profession that NPC has. As an example, Delphin sends roughly a dozen fish at a time as the fisherman, but Pastelle sends animal by-products instead, since she’s the resident rancher.
You get so much mail that includes items, that you might find that your inventory is filling up just through gifts from Islanders. While it can feel like a lot at times, it’s helpful when you’re starting the game, since you end up getting items you’re likely going to use.

Fewer Events
Keeping Track of Days is Less Important
Since Starsand Island is in early access, this could change in the future. Right now, there are only two main events on the in-game calendar, which are significantly fewer than in Stardew Valley. However, Stardew Valley has had a decade to add to its events.
This limited number of events lets you focus on learning other aspects of the game without keeping a close eye on the days. While it would be nice to see more events added in the future, the set-up right now is perfect for a new game, as many players will likely have a decent grasp on the game before any big updates are rolled out.

Cars
You Can Travel Easily
Stardew Valley has horses to speed up travel, but Starsand Island has vehicles and roads you can follow around the island. This style of travel works better for the 3D style of Starsand, which makes the world feel larger. As a result, having options that let you travel around can help you avoid missing bedtime and passing out.
There are a number of vehicles you can use, even including options like rollerblades and motorcycles. While larger vehicles tend to be more expensive or more difficult to build if you want to craft them yourself, you have the option to rent vehicles for a few days at a time for a small price, or through the use of rental tickets if you have them.
4
Robots
You Can Automate Everything
Starsand Island includes crafting recipes for a variety of little robots that perform the more tedious tasks on your behalf, meaning you don’t have to worry about them every day. It’s so nice to set up robots that can take care of your animals, your plants, and even go harvest wood for you.
Starsand Island: Best Ways to Get Money Early
Starsand Island has a lot for you to do from the get-go, and you’ll need steady funds for most of it.
The downside is that robots aren’t easy to craft. Before you can even consider it, you’ll have to advance through the crafter quests with Zerine. However, you should be doing the crafter quests anyway, because those are going to be the key to completing quests with other mentors. There’s a reason Solara recommends this path to you first.
3
Home Design
You Have More Creative Freedom at Home
Stardew Valley lets you make your house bigger and choose designs inside to a limited extent. Starsand Island takes an approach to decorating that’s more reminiscent of Animal Crossing. You can purchase additional plots for more space, and then you can craft and place furniture how you want.
You also get the chance to redesign your rooms and the layout of your house in Starsand Island. For some players, this is incredibly relaxing. There’s no pressure. You simply get to play with designs and turn your home into a place that’s uniquely yours.
2
Fishing System
Starsand Island’s Fishing Isn’t as Stressful
Stardew Valley has you catch fish by keeping a fish icon in the middle of a bar for a certain amount of time. This is a highly stressful system, as the bar bounces up when you click, so you have to balance it over the fish icon. Plus, the fish icon has a habit of moving at random, which can ruin your chance of catching it.
Starsand Island has a more classic fishing system. When you get a bite, you hold down the button to reel the fish in. You release the line if it turns red to avoid snapping it, then keep pulling when it’s no longer red. It’s straightforward and not at all stressful.
1
Crafting System
The Crafting Set-up Makes it Easy
In a way, Starsand Island holds your hand a lot more when you’re crafting. The quests with Zerine are designed to walk you through the process, and it’s easy to keep track of what materials you have and which ones you still need. Stardew’s crafting system isn’t necessarily hard to follow, but it doesn’t give you as much information as Starsand’s.
Starsand also makes it easy to find where you get different blueprints, as the item usually tells you when you look in the Islandpedia. The majority of blueprints are unlocked through the mentor that uses that item, but then you can find plenty of blueprints for furniture around the island, usually in treasure chests. It’s a smooth system that helps you stay organized.
Starsand Island and Stardew Valley aren’t at war with each other, but if you found Stardew’s mechanics to be on the stressful side, then you might want to try out Starsand. There could be a lot of reasons to try a new life sim, and if you want a new experience that’s more on the relaxing side, then Starsand Island could be a good fit for you.
