WASHINGTON: The Gaza Peace Board convened a high-level session to discuss the ongoing humanitarian and reconstruction situation in Gaza, with key remarks delivered by Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council.
Hafiz Ashrafi emphasized that Pakistan’s participation, along with other Islamic countries, in the Gaza Peace Board is solely for the benefit of the Palestinian people.
He highlighted that Pakistan’s public and government maintain a unified stance on the Palestine issue, while some elements attempt to create divisions for political purposes.
“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir have consistently represented the interests of the Muslim Ummah on the Palestine issue. We hope that today’s session will reaffirm Pakistan’s principled position advocating for a free and independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, the reconstruction of Gaza, a complete ceasefire, and an end to Israeli atrocities,” Hafiz Ashrafi said.
Key Highlights
Pakistan’s Position Remains Consistent: Participation in UN-approved frameworks for Gaza’s ceasefire and reconstruction does not indicate any shift in Pakistan’s longstanding support for Palestinian self-determination and an independent state. Pakistan has never recognized Israel, and this policy remains unchanged.
Collective Engagement: The Peace Board includes countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Qatar, and Indonesia. Hafiz Ashrafi clarified that participation should not be interpreted as normalization with Israel, as multilateral forums reflect global responsibility rather than diplomatic recognition.
Conditions for Participation: Pakistan’s engagement is contingent upon permanent ceasefire, reconstruction of Gaza, and the establishment of a Palestinian state, ensuring that all measures respect Palestinian interests.
Active Role in Advocacy: Pakistan’s presence at the table is intended to safeguard Palestinian rights and ensure that decisions made do not undermine Palestinian positions.
Hafiz Ashrafi concluded that Pakistan’s historical stance remains firm: full support for the Palestinian cause and practical engagement based on these principles.
