Van Niekerk praises young quick’s wicket-taking threat after eight-wicket win over Pakistan
KARACHI:
Sri Lanka’S fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk HAS praised the development of young pacer Dilshan Madushanka after his side defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the ODI tri-series in Lahore on Tuesday, highlighting his ability to combine a dangerous bouncer with swing and accuracy.
Van Niekerk said Sri Lanka’s bowling unit had responded positively after conceding 430 runs in an earlier outing against England, with a renewed emphasis on attacking the opposition and executing plans consistently.
“Yeah, I think from our point of view, we had to bounce back. It wasn’t too long ago that the same bowling unit went for 430. So from our point of view a lot of reflection, but bowling with a different intentionality,” Niekerk said.
“So a mentality around taking wickets and looking to be really positive and aggressive around our bowling. And then on top of that just an execution process. I think a lot of the time we’ve got good plans, but just being able to execute them more consistently.”
He said regular breakthroughs had helped Sri Lanka build momentum, adding that the bowlers had capitalised on their opportunities against Pakistan.
Van Niekerk described Dilshan as a highly talented young bowler who possessed the skills to trouble batsmen in different ways.
“Dilshan is a highly talented young bowler. He has all the skill sets. He swings the ball. He’s got a great bouncer. And I think that’s been a big part of his progression, is how to use his aggressive deliveries to make his other deliveries even more of a weapon.”
The coach said the ability to use the bouncer effectively had made Dilshan’s fuller deliveries more threatening, while his accuracy had improved his overall impact.
“And you saw tonight, when he bowls his bouncer really, really well, it makes his front foot ball really dangerous. And at the moment, I think he’s getting wickets with his bouncer, but he’s able to swing the ball and he’s really accurate. I think we only bowled one wide in 25 overs today as a group of bowlers.”
Van Niekerk also praised the contribution of Eshan Malinga and Asitha Fernando, saying the three quicks had complemented each other well as Sri Lanka’s pace attack continued to develop.
He acknowledged the need to manage Dilshan’s workload, saying the youngster was eager to bowl constantly and needed to be encouraged to moderate his bowling loads.
Sri Lanka’s victory came after a disciplined bowling performance, followed by an aggressive chase in which the visitors reached their target at around six runs an over.
Van Niekerk said the Lahore surface had played reasonably well, although it appeared slightly slower and offered more tennis-ball bounce than the Rawalpindi pitch, where dew had caused the ball to skid on.
With Sri Lanka preparing to face England in their final league game on Thursday, the coach said the team’s renewed focus on wicket-taking intent and consistent execution would remain central to its approach.
He also urged spectators to support the tournament, saying the quality of cricket across the tri-series had provided ample reason for fans to attend the remaining matches.
