England strengthened their grip on the second Test against Pakistan by extending their overall lead to 261 runs as they managed to score 81-3 in in their second innings at stumps on day three the second day at Lord’s on Friday
Resuming with a first-innings lead of 180 after dismissing Pakistan for 110, England suffered an early setback when Ben Duckett was caught by Babar Azam off Khurram Shahzad for one with the score on one.
Khurram struck again with the score on 13, trapping Jordan Cox lbw for 11 to leave the hosts two down.
Joe Root and Emilio Gay then steadied the innings with a 47-run partnership before Mohammad Ali dismissed Root lbw for 24, reducing England to 60-3.
At the close, Emilio Gay was unbeaten on 30 off 69 balls, while Harry Brook was batting on seven, with England well placed heading into the third day.
Pakistan were bowled out for just 110 in their first innings, conceding a 180-run lead to England in the second Test at Lord’s on Friday.
Pakistan lost their first wicket at just five runs when Shan Masood was dismissed for one by Jofra Archer in the fourth over.
Abdullah Shafique was the second wicket to fall, scoring five off 32 balls as Pakistan slipped to 16-2.
Azan Awais then put together a brief partnership with Babar Azam before Babar was dismissed for eight, leaving Pakistan 30-3. Babar was caught by Jordan Cox off Josh Tongue.
Awais, who top-scored with 46 off 102 balls, then shared a 33-run partnership with Saud Shakeel, taking Pakistan to 63 before Shakeel fell for 16.
Mohammad Rizwan was the fifth wicket to fall, dismissed for seven with the score at 91. He had shared a 28-run partnership with Awais.
Ali Usman was then dismissed for one at 104, followed by Khurram Shahzad for same score at 105 and Awais who made 46 before being caught by Emilio Gay off Ollie Robinson.
Mohammad Abbas scored three runs before being bowled by Jofra Archer at 110.
Mohammad Ali remained unbeaten on three as Pakistan were bowled out for 110, with Imam-ul-Haq absent hurt.
For England, Robinson claimed four wickets each, while Archer picked up three wickets. Josh Tongue contributed with two wickets.
England had earlier been dismissed for 290, leaving Pakistan 180 runs behind after their first innings.
Earlier, resuming their innings at 248-9 after 56 overs on the opening day, England were dismissed for 290 after adding 42 runs in 10.4 overs on the second morning.
Gus Atkinson was the final batter to be dismissed after scoring 45 off 46 deliveries, including six boundaries, while Josh Tongue remained unbeaten on 30 off 48 deliveries, with four boundaries.
The duo added 47 runs for the final wicket to help England recover from a difficult position and post a competitive total.
Pakistan’s pace attack continued to dominate, with Mohammad Abbas finishing with figures of 4-73 from 20 overs.
Mohammad Ali claimed three wickets, while Khurram Shahzad and Ali Usman took one wicket each as Pakistan wrapped up England’s innings.
