Left-hander ruled out of second Test after scans confirmed finger injury sustained in the Trinidad opener

In a severe blow to Pakistan’s red-ball ambitions, experienced top-order batsman Shan Masood was officially ruled out of the upcoming second Test against the West Indies on Thursday.
The left-handed batsman suffered a serious injury to the index finger of his left hand during the first Test match in Trinidad. Following comprehensive radiological scans and a rigorous clinical assessment by experts, the team management confirmed that the top-order mainstay would not be fit in time for the second clash.
According to an official statement of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Masood is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation and treatment under the strict supervision of the Pakistan team’s medical panel. While he will not take the field in the second Test, the team management has decided to keep him with the squad in the Caribbean to monitor his rehabilitation closely.
“Following a scan and clinical assessment, Shan is currently undergoing treatment from the Pakistan team medical panel. His availability for the first Test against England starting August 19 at Leeds will depend on his recovery and clinical progress. In the meanwhile, he will remain with the team,” the PCB said.

The timing of the injury is particularly devastating for Pakistan’s packed summer schedule. His availability for the high-profile first Test against England, scheduled to commence on August 19 at Leeds, remains highly uncertain.

Masood’s sudden absence leaves a gaping hole in Pakistan’s top order. Known for his resilience and technical acumen against the moving ball, Masood’s baseline stability will be sorely missed on the spicy West Indian tracks.
Masood had hit a fine century in the first Test against the West Indies, which the latter won by 90 runs following a pathetic batting performance by Pakistan when they were folded for just 120 in their second innings while chasing 211 on a pitch which was very difficult to bat on.
