New rule announced for rickshaws in Karachi

45,000 vehicles are still registered under the names of their previous owners.

The Karachi Traffic Police plans to introduce new rules that will allow only rickshaws equipped with meters to operate in the city.

Speaking at the Karachi Press Club, DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah said the department is also working to remove ching-chi rickshaws from major roads to improve traffic flow and road safety.

He acknowledged that some motorists have experienced problems with the e-challan system and said a new policy is being prepared to address those issues. He explained that e-challans are generated automatically, which can sometimes result in errors.

Pir Muhammad Shah said the introduction of lane markings and the e-challan system has helped improve traffic flow in Karachi. He also said 164 people were killed in accidents involving heavy vehicles in the city last year.

The DIG also said official records show that around 45,000 vehicles are still registered under the names of their previous owners. He added that action has been taken against several individuals over the issue, with some being handed over to the police.
