Joshua Jackson has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of his former co-star James Van Der Beek, offering an emotional tribute during an interview on Today.

Van Der Beek, best known for starring in the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek, died in February at the age of 48 after previously revealing he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Speaking about the loss, Jackson reflected on the impact of the tragedy, particularly from the perspective of a parent. The actor said that becoming a father has changed how he processes the loss, noting that the grief for Van Der Beek’s family feels even more profound.

Jackson also recalled the formative years they spent working together on Dawson’s Creek, which ran from 1998 to 2003. According to the actor, the experience was an important chapter in both of their lives and something he remembers with great appreciation.

He went on to praise Van Der Beek’s character, describing him as a devoted husband, supportive partner, and dedicated father who faced difficult circumstances with grace and faith.

The interview came as Jackson partnered with the National Hockey League and AstraZeneca for the “Get Body Checked Against Cancer” awareness campaign. The initiative encourages people—especially men—to prioritize regular health screenings.

Jackson said his involvement in the campaign became even more meaningful after Van Der Beek’s diagnosis, emphasizing how cancer has affected many families, including his own.

Before his death, Van Der Beek had also become a strong advocate for early cancer screening, urging people to pay attention to even minor health changes and seek medical advice promptly.
