Brigadier (Retd) : Karrar Hussain Shah

When I first opened my eyes in this world, the first face I saw was that of a loving, caring, and devoted mother. Her gentle touch, warm smile, and endless patience formed the earliest memories of my childhood. Like every child, I did not understand the sacrifices she was making for me. I only knew that whenever I cried, she was there; whenever I needed protection, she stood like a shield. As I grew older, I realized that the strength of a mother is one of the greatest blessings bestowed by Almighty Allah.

A mother is the first teacher, the first guide, and the first protector of a child. My mother’s life revolved around the well-being of her family. From early morning until late at night, she worked tirelessly without ever complaining. She taught us discipline, compassion, honesty, and faith. Many years later, I understood that the foundation of my character was built by her silent sacrifices.

Life moved forward, and a new chapter opened when I got married. Allah blessed me with a wife who proved to be not only a life partner but also a pillar of strength in every stage of life. Marriage is often described as a partnership, but in reality, the success of a family greatly depends on the patience, wisdom, and devotion of a woman.

Together we faced the challenges of life, and together we celebrated its joys. She played a remarkable role in the upbringing of our three sons. Raising children is never an easy task, but her dedication, guidance, and affection ensured that they grew up with good values and strong moral character. While a father often focuses on providing for the family, it is the mother who shapes the emotional and moral personality of the children.

In the journey of life, my sisters also remained an important part of my world. Sisters are a symbol of affection and emotional strength in a family. They bring warmth, unity, and harmony to relationships. Their presence reminds us of the beauty of family bonds and the importance of mutual care and respect.

Later in life, when my sons got married, I witnessed another beautiful dimension of womanhood through my daughters-in-law. They joined our family with respect and love, bringing new energy and happiness to our home. In many cultures, daughters-in-law are seen only as new members of a family, but in reality, they often become the thread that strengthens relationships and preserves family traditions.

When I reflect on my life, I realize that at every stage there was a woman who contributed to my happiness, stability, and success. From mother to wife, from sisters to daughters-in-law, women have always been the unseen architects of family life.

International Women’s Day reminds us to recognize and honor the role of women in society. Women are not only the caretakers of families but also the builders of communities and nations. Their patience, resilience, and dedication keep the fabric of society strong.

In many parts of the world, women have faced hardships, discrimination, and injustice. Yet despite these challenges, they have continued to play a vital role in nurturing families and shaping future generations. History repeatedly shows that when women are respected, educated, and empowered, societies flourish and prosper.

Islam gave great dignity and respect to women at a time when they were often treated unfairly in many societies. The teachings of the Holy Quran and the sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) clearly emphasize the honor and rights of women.

The Holy Quran repeatedly stresses kindness and justice toward women. It reminds believers that men and women are partners in building a righteous society. The Quran also highlights the importance of family life, mutual respect, and compassion between husband and wife.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) demonstrated through his life how women should be treated with dignity and respect. One of his famous sayings states that “the best among you are those who are best to their women.” This powerful message establishes the moral responsibility of men to treat women with kindness and fairness.

Another well-known Hadith reminds us of the extraordinary status of mothers. When a companion asked the Prophet who deserved the greatest respect and care, he replied, “your mother,” and he repeated it three times before mentioning the father. This beautiful teaching reflects the immense sacrifices mothers make in raising their children.

The wisdom of great Islamic personalities also highlights the dignity of women. Ali ibn Abi Talib emphasized compassion and respect in family life and advised believers to treat women with kindness and understanding. His teachings reflect the spirit of justice and humanity that Islam promotes.

Islamic history is full of remarkable women whose courage, wisdom, and faith shaped the course of events. Among the most respected is Khadija bint Khuwaylid, who supported the Holy Prophet during the most difficult days of the early Islamic mission. Her faith, loyalty, and sacrifice remain an inspiring example for all generations.

Another towering figure is Fatimah bint Muhammad, whose piety, patience, and devotion made her one of the most revered women in Islamic history. Her life represents dignity, humility, and strength of character.

The courage and resilience of Zaynab bint Ali also stand as a symbol of bravery and truth. After the tragedy of Battle of Karbala, her powerful speeches exposed injustice and preserved the message of sacrifice and righteousness.

In Pakistan’s history as well, many women have played extraordinary roles in shaping the nation. One prominent example is Fatima Jinnah, who stood firmly beside her brother during the struggle for independence. Her courage and commitment earned her the title “Madar-e-Millat,” the Mother of the Nation.

Another remarkable leader was Benazir Bhutto, who became the first woman Prime Minister in the Muslim world. Despite facing immense political challenges, she demonstrated determination and leadership on the global stage.

These inspiring women remind us that when women are given opportunities, they can achieve extraordinary things and contribute greatly to society.

However, honoring women should not be limited to a single day each year. Respect for women must be reflected in our daily behavior, our laws, and our social attitudes. Women should be provided equal opportunities in education, healthcare, employment, and leadership. They must also be protected from violence, discrimination, and exploitation.

The true spirit of International Women’s Day lies in recognizing that women are not weak or dependent; they are strong partners in the progress of humanity. Their sacrifices, patience, and love shape families and influence generations.

When I look back at my own life, I see a beautiful journey guided by the presence of remarkable women-my mother who nurtured me, my wife who stood beside me, my sisters who shared my joys and sorrows, and my daughters-in-law who enriched our family life.

Their contributions may not always be visible in history books, but they are written deeply in the hearts of those whose lives they touch.

On this International Women’s Day, let us express our gratitude and respect for all women. Let us ensure that they receive the dignity, appreciation, and opportunities they deserve.

For behind every strong family, every successful man, and every flourishing society, there is always the silent, powerful, and inspiring presence of a woman.
