‘Game of Thrones’ movie in the works at Warner Bros

Beau Willimon to write script which is expected to focus on events occurring before those presented in HBO series

Winter is coming to the big screen. A “Game of Thrones” movie is officially in development at Warner Bros., with acclaimed writer Beau Willimon attached to pen the script.

Willimon, best known as the showrunner of “House of Cards” and a writer on the critically acclaimed “Andor” series, has already submitted a draft for the feature film, according to Page Six Hollywood, which first broke the news.

While plot details remain unconfirmed, sources indicate the film will focus on Aegon I, the legendary founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros. This story takes place several centuries before the events of the original HBO series, chronicling how the Targaryens first established their reign over the Seven Kingdoms. The family would later spawn iconic characters like Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke in the hit series.

The project represents Warner Bros.’ first attempt to bring George R.R. Martin’s world to movie theaters, expanding beyond the successful HBO television universe that already includes the prequel series “House of the Dragon” and the upcoming “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

However, the film’s path to production faces potential complications. Warner Bros. is currently in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance, and if the merger is approved, new leadership could potentially scrap existing projects in development.

Despite the uncertainty, “Game of Thrones” remains one of the company’s most valuable franchises. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison has pledged to release 30 films theatrically once the merger is complete, meaning the combined entity will need substantial content for their joint slate. As one of HBO’s crown jewels, a Targaryen conquest film would seemingly fit those ambitions.

Representatives for Warner Bros. and HBO have not yet commented on the project. More details are expected to emerge as development continues.

Game of Thrones attracted a record viewership on HBO and has a broad, active, and international fan base. Many critics and publications have named the show one of the greatest television series of all time. Critics have praised the series for its acting, complex characters, story, scope, and production values, although its frequent use of nudity and violence (including sexual violence) generated controversy. The final season received significant criticism for its reduced length and creative decisions, with many considering it a disappointing conclusion. The series received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019. Its other awards and nominations include three Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation, a Peabody Award, and five nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama.

Two prequel series, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, premiered on HBO in 2022 and 2026, respectively.

Game of Thrones is roughly based on the storylines of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R. R. Martin, set in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and the continent of Essos. The series follows several simultaneous plotlines. The first story arc follows a war of succession among competing claimants, the second concerns the actions of the exiled scion to reclaim the throne, and the third chronicles the threat of the impending winter, as well as the legendary creatures and fierce peoples of the North.
