Mewgenics has a lot going on, and that’s a very good thing. With everything packed into this game, it’s understandable to be a little confused or overwhelmed by some early game choices. This turn-based game has a ton of cats, both young and old, to understand.
Retired cats are typically the oldest in your group, depending on how you play the game. Once they’re retired, you can’t send them out on adventures anymore, but they still have more than a few uses.
10 Best Strategy Games With Roguelike Mechanics
DualShockers compiled a list of several challenging and fun strategy games with deceptively complex roguelike mechanics.
Of course, just like in any good roguelike, things are never as simple as they seem. If you’re a bit concerned about how to use your retired cats, then this guide will explain why you should keep them around and what you can do with them.
What To Do With Retired Cats?
Retired cats aren’t just good for shipping off or making babies, but you’ll need to progress in the game to a certain point. Once you reach Act 2, you’ll unlock home invaders like Guillotina. This is something that will happen occasionally, but we’ll explain that a bit later. Retired cats are easy to spot because they’re usually one solid color, from their color class, and they’ll wear a little crown on them.
Most of your retired cats will be pretty important, so be careful with how you handle them, since you can accidentally put yourself in a major bind if you get rid of the wrong ones. Of course, you can only control this so much, but for now, we’ll focus on their uses and offer some explanations for those uses.
Breeding Retired Cats
This is probably the use that makes the most sense and is the easiest to understand. Your retired cats should usually be your best cats if you choose ones with particularly high stats to begin with.
Whenever you have retired cats with good base stats, which you can see once you’ve sent Tink enough kittens, you can put them in one room of your house to get them to start making some babies with better stats.
You can increase the odds of this happening by grabbing the right pieces of furniture and setting them up in the rooms you want the cats to breed in. Don’t stress too much about getting things perfect, but make sure you’re breeding your cats correctly since it’ll make the game significantly easier.

If you’re not a fan of roguelikes already, these games will get you on your way.
Donating Retired Cats
One other main use of retired cats is donating them to various people around the map to unlock more upgrades for your house or future runs. You’ll need to use retired cats for the following people around town:
- Butch wants cats that have been to specific areas.
- Frank wants retired cats of any kind.
- Baby Jack wants cats with injuries.
- Tracy wants cats at age/level five or higher.
- Dr. Beanies wants cats with mutations, birth defects, disorders, or parasites.
For some of these, they won’t need to be retired, but for the most part, it’s easier to get retired cats for most donations. Try not to get rid of the ones you want to be breeding, but if you desperately need one of the upgrades, it isn’t difficult to get a few more retired cats.

House Boss Defense Battles
You won’t gain access to this until you’ve unlocked Act 2, but the moment you do, things get a lot more interesting. Retired cats get a whole new purpose because they’re now the only ones who can defend your home from invaders.
You’ll get a week of notification to know when the attacker is coming. This gives you some time to prepare and maybe breed some cats you’d like to use for defense. On the day before, you can go on an adventure with some cats you like use them for defense, provided they survive that long.
Here’s a list of the following House Bosses you can face off against:
- Guillotina
- Guillotina 2
- Guillotina 3
- Pyrophina
- Zaratana
- Pyrophina vs Zaratana
- C-800
- C-1000
- Hitler III
These fights are pretty tough, so you’ll want to make sure you come prepared and don’t try to do this willy-nilly. Use the time you get wisely and make sure to gather some items that might be useful while taking on these powerful foes.
While defeating these foes gives you some quest items and helps you progress in the game, you technically don’t have to win the fight. All that happens on a loss is your retired cats die.
If you manage to win, the cats become Super Retired and can’t be used for anything outside of breeding and donations. They’ll probably be pretty old by now, so make sure you take good care of your cats to reach the harder acts of the game.
