A formal investigation has been initiated at the federal level to determine accountability

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif orders action and possible management changes after national hockey team’s disappointing performances in international events.

    ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a formal inquiry and signaled possible management changes after the national team’s poor performance in the Pro Hockey League, officials said on Thursday.

The move comes as concerns grow over the continued decline of hockey, Pakistan’s national sport. Sharif expressed strong displeasure over recent results, including the team’s showing during a tour of Australia, according to sources in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Officials said the government is preparing action against those responsible within the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), with significant changes in management expected. A formal investigation has been initiated at the federal level to determine accountability.

Sources added that the legal wing of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination, along with senior lawyers, is being consulted to ensure transparency in the inquiry. The prime minister has said negligence in hockey affairs will not be tolerated and strict action will follow if lapses are proven.

Consultations are also underway on seeking the resignation of the PHF president, while the ministry has been directed to proceed with a formal probe, officials said.

Government sources said all possible measures would be taken to revive the sport and restore its past prominence. Key decisions are likely after completion of the investigation.

Despite receiving government support and concessions, the PHF has struggled to provide adequate facilities to national players, the sources added. Officials and team management could face replacement as part of reforms.

Pakistan captain Imad Shakeel Butt previously alleged serious shortcomings by PHF officials, saying players were not provided proper accommodation during the Australia tour.
