New Delhi, Jul 4 (PTI) Telecom regulator Trai on Friday began a session paper to discover a framework to permit use of international SIMs in gadgets meant for export solely.
A SIM card refers to subscriber id module — a chip required for connecting a tool to a telecom community.
The regulator has issued a session paper on the “regulatory framework for the sale of international telecom service suppliers’ SIM/eSIM playing cards for the use in M2M/IoT gadgets meant for export functions” following a reference sought by the Division of Telecommunications based mostly on trade request.
“On this regard, a session paper on “the Regulatory Framework for the Sale of Overseas Telecom Service Suppliers’ SIM/eSIM Playing cards for the use in M2M/IoT Units Meant for Export Functions” has been positioned on TRAI’s web site,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) mentioned in a press release.
Whereas the current rule permits sale of international telecom operators’ SIM to be used by prospects travelling abroad, the trade has identified limitations and sought some readability particularly round authorisation to promote SIM for gadgets meant for export solely.
The current rule mandates activation of SIM 48 hours earlier than prospects’ travelling abroad and deactivation inside 24 hours of touchdown in India.
The trade has mentioned that in case of machine-to-machine and IoT (web of issues) gadgets, the SIM could also be required to be activated for a brief time period throughout manufacturing for pattern, demo, or prototype testing of the M2M/ IoT gadgets to make sure their full performance earlier than the export.
As a part of the method, Trai is in search of feedback on whether or not solely telecom licence holders must be allowed to promote SIM for export functions or it may be any bonafide Indian entity that must be allowed to take a “no objection certificates” for procuring and promoting such SIMs or eSIMs.
Trai has mounted a deadline of August 1 for feedback and August 18 for counter feedback on the session paper.
